Weekly Update 3/25/2022

Dear NCHS Family,

Spring has sprung, and NCHS is sprinting into the fourth quarter.  The third quarter ends April 1st, and grades are available for viewing on April 7th. Please make sure that students check in with their teachers to complete any missing assignments.

On Tuesday, March 21, members of the National Honor Society visited Classical Magnet School in Bridgeport; they assisted teachers in helping students one on one. They also read to them, danced with them, and had outdoor recess! It was a wonderful experience shared by all!

The NC Color Drop is fast approaching! On March 26th at 10:00 am, a helicopter will release 2,000 golf balls over a target at Waveny Park. Each participant will receive their assigned numbers before the drop. The winning golf ball is announced immediately following the contest. The required SAT testing date for all 11th graders is the morning of Tuesday, March 29, 2022, with makeup dates of April 27 and 28, 2022, for those who miss testing due to illness. Click here for additional information.

US Polo Nationals update – after a close game, Luke Howe and his Yale team finished strong, winning the consolation game to place 3rd overall in the Nation! Even better, Luke won the 2022 USPA Interscholastic National Sportsmanship Award! Congratulations to Luke and his team.

DEPARTMENT NEWS:

FRENCH:

The French II students are studying a unit on food in France and are now creating an authentic menu for their own French restaurant. They had a lot of fun discovering what French people eat, such as les escargots!

The French III students are completing the “Save the planet “ unit.” They enjoyed the video clip of a popular French singer’s song “L’homme Nouveau” by Jérémy Frérot, highlighting the challenges of our environment.

Bon Appétit! Freshman French II classes (period 6 & 7) enjoyed creating skits of a family visit to the restaurant, all in French! Students wrote dialogues, incorporating vocabulary from our ‘La Nourriture’ unit, all about food. The skits were wonderfully creative and often highly amusing, even incorporating some improv ‘en français.’ Students also created their own menus, including traditional French dishes, with prices in €! It was fun to speak French and use it in a real-life setting.

SCIENCE:

Students in AP Environmental Science built an understanding of where their trash and waste goes. Students demonstrated their initial understanding, consulted various resources, then illustrated their more robust knowledge by creating a visual representation on their desks.

Students in Biology explored an interesting genetic phenomenon and showed their understanding by creating a visual representation.

Students in Geophysical Science used various food items to simulate the different types of tectonic plate interactions.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Students in World History II have been working to understand the global impact of Nationalist thinking in the 19th century. From this perspective, they examined the Latin American Independence movement and created political cartoons that comment on various Nationalist qualities therein.

Ms. Browner’s freshmen World History students researched emperors of the Pax Romana and created ‘dating profiles’ in which each boasted about his accomplishments!

VPA:

Ms. Core’s Drawing 1 classes are working on using colored pencils to create a non-objective, abstract mandala colored pencil drawing.  Students are working hard on layering color, value, and matching the forms from their magazine swatches.  The finished results are amazing!

Filmmaking 1: Students create storyboards to prepare for their “Lost & Found” Group film production.
