DEPARTMENT NEWS:

CTE:

Intro to TV Broadcasting

Right now, students are learning how to shoot high-quality videos with their phones and also how to use stabilizers to get even better shots. This includes different types of monopods, tripods, and camera mounts.

Advanced TV Broadcasting

NCTV has been busy producing outstanding content over the past few weeks. Between music concerts, the Morning Announcements, podcasts, and plenty of live sports, there is plenty to watch on NCTV’s YouTube channel. Check it out, and don’t forget to subscribe to NCTV!

Woodworking 3

There is one semester-long Woodworking 3 project to design and produce an end table. With this project, students look at different furniture styles before deciding what they want their project to look like. They then have to look at the available space at home and work on creating a design that can live in that space. We are approaching the end of the design phase, and after we return from break, the actual production phase will begin.

Ms. Zilly’s Interior Design Class spent the first two weeks of class learning about principles and elements of design. They took a few days to learn about color theory and the meaning of color. Groups created their business logos, choosing specific colors to represent them and attract clients. Have you ever noticed that almost all major fast-food chains use red as the key color of their logos?

The Food & Nutrition classes are off to a great start this semester! After learning about safety and sanitation, they entered the labs and started our Quick Bread unit. Students have made muffins, biscuits, and waffles so far!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

On Monday, February 12th, our Unified Basketball team hosted Westhill H.S. for a thrilling home game. The gym was packed with enthusiastic spectators, creating an electric atmosphere. Both teams showcased their skills, and everyone had a fantastic time! Huge thanks to all who came out to cheer and support both teams!

SCIENCE:

Students in Physics attempted different challenges at each station to use their understanding of rotational motion and center of mass and how it applies to each scenario.

Students in Geophysical Science find the orbital velocity needed to keep their planet in a stable orbit and calculate the Gravitational Force of their star pulling on their planet.

Students in Environmental Science are learning about recycling paper during the pollution unit. They are exploring the energy inputs in the process and evaluating the pros and cons of recycling.

On Wednesday, AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C students competed in the annual TEAMS competition. TEAMS, Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science, is a one-day national competition that allows high-school and middle-school students to discover engineering and apply knowledge. Students work together to solve real-world engineering problems, applying their math and science skills.

During Wednesday’s competition, students completed the “Design/Build” portion, in which teams design and build a solution to an engineering challenge. Students also used math and science skills to solve real-world engineering challenges on a multiple-choice test.

Students in Biology class had fun and learned a lot about DNA – from strawberry cells!!! They pulverized a whole strawberry and then added an extraction solution of detergent soap and salt, which was then further mashed up in a Ziploc baggie. They assembled an apparatus to filter the contents of their bag and then slowly added cold ethanol to the filtrate. The alcohol formed a separate layer on top of the filtrate. Using an inoculating loop, the students gathered the DNA that precipitated at the interface between the layers. Finally, they made observations and answered analysis questions.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Ms. Arastu’s World History classes seized the opportunity for extra credit by crafting snow sculptures depicting 19th-century revolutionary leaders as snowmen on the snow day. A superbly crafted video link from our freshman class showcased their endeavor to construct a Roman structure, the Colosseum, demonstrating its eventual destruction in an earthquake during the late Middle Ages.

Andrew Kim, an AP Modern student in Ms. Rothschild’s class, shared this snow sculpture, his interpretation of a political cartoon showcasing China’s response to Imperialism in the 19th century!

Ms. Rothschild‘s AP student Naomi Pitts’ snowman rendition of a historical character, Swami Vivekananda!!!

Freshmen in World History I recreated the fall of the ancient Roman Republic, playing the role of various notable Romans and debating the merits of Julius Caesar and his populist campaign to overhaul the traditional republican system.

Juniors and Seniors in Civics, strengthening their understanding of various government types through creating models of each in the MakerSpace.

VPA:

NCHS FILM is underway with the Film Noir project (film 2). Students are using advanced lighting strategies to bring their Neo-Noir scripts to life. In their community block, they worked together to make Valentine’s Decorations for their teachers 🙂

The Drowsy Chaperone is a delightful celebration of musical theatre, ingeniously wrapped in a comedy that parodies and pays homage to the Golden Age musicals of the 1920s. The show’s narrator, a true musical theatre lover, shares his favorite record, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” with the audience. The show miraculously springs to life in his apartment, blending fantasy with reality. Its self-aware humor, eccentric characters, catchy tunes, and intricate dance numbers offer heartfelt moments that emphasize the transformative power of theatre, making it a must-see for both seasoned theatre-goers and newcomers alike. Bring the whole family!

Performances are March 14-16 at 7 pm and March 16 at 2 pm in the NCHS Auditorium. Click here to buy tickets.
