Weekly Update 3/08/2024

Dear NCHS Family,

On March 12th and 13th, we will host a visiting committee from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) for our decennial Collaborative Conference. During the two-day visit, a team of five educational leaders from across the region will tour the school, observe classes, and interview students, parents, educators, and administrators. The visit will have minimal impact on instruction and provide an excellent opportunity to further reflect on our many strengths as a school community and help inform our next steps for continued growth.

Congratulations to the NCHS Girls’ Hockey Team and coaches on their outstanding achievement in winning the state championship! Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork have paid off, culminating in this well-deserved victory. Well done, NCHS Girls’ Hockey Team!

I’m sure Coach Reihl’s grandparents brought the team an extra layer of luck!

8th GRADE ORIENTATION NIGHT~

Last night, we welcomed 8th-grade families for the 9th-grade orientation. It was an evening filled with opportunities to explore everything NCHS has to offer, from academics to exciting elective courses. The Performing Arts students filled the hallways with music and song. Meanwhile, the food courses provided delicious snacks and treats, and NCTV provided a sneak peek of a TV studio.  A heartfelt thank you to our students, parents, faculty, and facilities team for their dedicated efforts to make this night a resounding success.

Stay healthy, NCHS!

Juniors: If you visit colleges during April break, you may be offered an interview! Be prepared by attending the college interviewing workshop on April 11 during the lunch block. Email Mrs. Carroll (susan.carroll@ncps-k12.org) to reserve a space and let her know what lunch you have that day (Day B).

The Senior Internship Program is thrilled to share that all participating Seniors have been assigned to an internship. On February 26th, students received an email notifying them of their internship placement. In this email, seniors also received the SIP Contract, which explains the rules/guidelines of the program. The contract must be signed by both the student and parent/guardian and returned to the Main Office no later than March 12th. In addition, students have been tasked with reaching out to their internship site supervisors to introduce themselves and learn more about the logistics of their internship (e.g., specific hours, dress code, parking, etc.).  On March 19th, mandatory training will be held in the Wagner Room. This engaging training will feature two speakers: Dolly Meckler, an entrepreneur, content creator, and social media executive (NCHS alums), and Stephanie Scoon, a Talent Advisor and Executive Coach. The training is designed to help prepare students for their current internship as well as future Internships. If you have any SIP questions, please feel free to reach out to Kelly DelMazio at kelly.delmazio@ncps-k12.org or 203.594.4752.

DEPARTMENT NEWS:

ENGLISH:

In the UConn ECE/Honors Senior English & Film Studies class, students curated images that impacted their ways of seeing.  In this visual culture unit, students studied how images contribute to and reflect their understanding of the world.  They then applied these concepts to examine the images from their experiences.  Some students took the opportunity to reflect on the images from their early childhood, while others thought critically about the media they encounter now as young adults.  After they gathered these images, students were tasked with “installing” their galleries around the building, considering how the contexts in which they situated their work would impact the audience’s viewing experience.

CTE:

The NCHS Preschool opened the spring session this week. Child Development students prepared lessons on two story books, Mouse Paint and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.

Students’ lessons include a craft and two learning activities to enhance areas of development in number and letter identification, sensory, art, and music.

The Culinary students are busy planning their menus and testing which recipes they choose. Rams Cafe will open next week.

Food and Nutrition and Baking & Pastry Art students prepared snacks for the 8th Grade Orientation. Mr. Egan tasted the edible chocolate chip cookie bites.

SCIENCE:

On February 24, the NCHS Science Team visited UCONN to participate in the Connecticut Science Bowl! Both teams placed well, with Team B making it to the double elimination rounds after lunch and Team A placing 5th in the wildcard rounds. The Science Team, led by student captains Niyathi Iyengar and Melissa Phillips, had an impressive finish.

Students in Honors Chemistry use freezing point depression to determine molecular weight.

Students in AP Environmental Science built their understanding of how a ground-source heat pump functions by constructing a model system and designing an investigation. Students tried to determine which variables had the most significant impact on changing the water temperature in their model system.

In their chemical reactions unit, Chemistry students decomposed sodium chlorate and used mole ratios to determine whether the product was sodium chloride, sodium chlorite, or sodium hypochlorite.

Students in Biology used The Dome to present their research on the human genome.

Students in Environmental Science collect data on their particulate matter lab in the air pollution unit.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

The New Canaan High School Model Congress participated in an event hosted by Darien High School. Junior Brandon Ma received the award for Best Bill!

WORLD LANGUAGE:

The Mandarin 5 Honors class practiced Tea Zen Meditation with a tea master, Changzhai, who visited NCHS from the Chan Meditation Center in Queens, New York. The art of tea meditation, deeply rooted in Chinese culture, allowed students in Mandarin 5 Honors classes to slow down, focus on their breath, and savor each sip of tea with intentionality. Through the simple act of preparing and enjoying tea mindfully, students experienced a sense of calm and relaxation, ultimately reducing stress levels. Tea meditation provided a chance to cultivate mindfulness and inner peace amidst the hustle and bustle of academic life.

PAINTING students create self-portraits in achromatic (black and white) acrylics. Values (a range of black, white, and all the grays in between) are key, as are accuracy and neatness.

Blake DiCapua is nearly finished with his painting.  The last step is adding a color (of their choice) to the background!

The Drowsy Chaperone is a delightful celebration of musical theater, ingeniously wrapped in a comedy that parodies and pays homage to the Golden Age musicals of the 1920s. The show’s narrator, a true musical theater lover, shares his favorite record, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” with the audience. The show miraculously springs to life in his apartment, blending fantasy with reality. Its self-aware humor, catchy tunes, intricate dance numbers, and eccentric characters (a bride who’s giving up the stage for love, her debonair bridegroom, a harried producer, jovial gangsters posing as pastry chef, an excentric wedding host, a Latin lothario, an aviatrix, and The Drowsy Chaperone) offer heartfelt moments that emphasize the transformative power of theater, making it a must-see for both seasoned theater-goers and newcomers alike. Bring the whole family! Performances are March 14-16 at 7 pm, with a 2 pm matinee on March 16. All in the NCHS Auditorium.
